It wasn’t supposed to be easy but the Brewers also didn’t play up to their potential as they compiled a 12-15 record during the month of June. The offense has finally started to come around but the team’s pitching staff has been unable to maintain its torrid pace and the offense remains inconsistent.
The big news, of course, was the arrival of top prospects Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder and the swap of Junior Spivey for Tomo Ohka. Weeks and Fielder have dazzled the Crew’s fans with impressive performances while Ohka has stepped in nicely as the club’s fifth starter.
The bottom line, however, is that the Brewers dropped from nine games behind St. Louis entering June to 13 back as the calendar turns to July. While the Cubs remain three games above .500 and in second place, Milwaukee has fallen from two games to six games below the break-even mark and their grip on third place is tenuous.
