In a move intended to give him a better opportunity to play in the Majors, the Brewers dealt veteran catcher Mark Johnson to the Cubs on Saturday in exchange for minor league outfielder Travis Ezi. The 29-year old Johnson spent most of last season with Triple-A Indianapolis where he hit .259/.358/.378 in 88 games before getting a cup of coffee with Milwaukee in September. A first round pick of the White Sox in 1994, Johnson is a solid defensive catcher with good plate discipline but few other offensive skills. In parts of seven big league seasons, the left-handed hitter has batted only .217 with a .318 slugging average and will likely become Triple-A Iowa’s starting backstop.
