That's how close the Brewers came to beating the Pirates on Wednesday night in front of 15,625 at Miller Park.

Nursing a 2-1 lead with two outs in the ninth, Dan Kolb grooved a 2-2 fastball to Craig Wilson and the Bucs' slugger thumped it over the left-field wall.

"I was just thinking to hit the ball hard," the Pirates' long-haired slugger said about his tenth career pinch-hit home run. "After that, you can't really do much more. Where it goes is out of your control."

"It was a bad pitch," Kolb explained. "I threw it down the middle of the plate and he hit it out of the park. It's kind of funny; the only strike I threw that inning got hit out of the park. I'm going to get about three hours' sleep. I don't take these things very well."

"Willy came up big for us," Lloyd McClendon said. "We were down to the last out and it was reminiscent of 2002 when he hit seven of those things. He's quite remarkable coming off the bench."
