Before Wednesday night’s game, the Cubs did some serious soul searching. The players had a meeting, Sammy Sosa was dropped out of the cleanup spot, and Dusty Baker urged his team to regroup and keep battling toward for the National League Wild Card. In other words, it was a big game for Chicago, who came in losers of seven of their last nine.
And, indeed, they came up big.
Facing off with Brewers’ ace Ben Sheets, Matt Clement and the Cubs got off to an early lead and eventually prevailed 7-5 in eleven innings. In a season series that has been filled with “instant classics,” Tuesday’s showdown in front of 41,441 fans at Miller Park was perhaps the most impressive of all. At least if offense is your thing, that is.
