When the story of the 2004 Milwaukee Brewers is written, it’s a good bet that this week’s series in Cincinnati won’t be a highlight. After scratching and clawing their way to a two-games-apiece split with the rival Cubs at Wrigley Field to open the second half, the Brewers entered play on Monday with a chance to vault themselves into the top spot in the NL Wild Card race.

The Reds had other ideas, apparently.

The prime culprits in the pair of losses were former-Yankees, fruits of a farm system that has been rendered barren by an ever-expanding appetite for acquiring talented additions from teams who can no longer afford them.
