Slate.com has published a fantastic article by Will Carroll that discusses labrum injuries to pitchers. Will is the outsider’s source for information about baseball injuries and his treatment of the subject is always both professional and enlightening. In fact, I can’t wait to read his recently-published book, Saving the Pitcher: Preventing Pitching Injuries in Modern Baseball, which discusses all manner of pitching injuries and the anatomy behind them. For too long, decisions about proper “usage” of pitchers has been based on anecdotal evidence and ignorant demands for “toughness.” Hopefully Will’s book will become standard reading for little league and high school baseball coaches nationwide. The arms of thousands of youngsters will be thankful.
