I love baseball. I’m not as much of a sabermetrician as some people, but I am definitely more than a casual observer of America’s Pastime. One of my time-consuming hobbies is fantasy baseball, an addictive role-playing game that is equal parts luck, sabermetrics, diplomacy, and flat-out baseball knowledge. I’ve done a lot of roster tweaking lately - here is my squad (which competes in a league at Yahoo!):
The Brewers of Batman
C - Charles Johnson, Colorado Rockies
1B - Jeff Bagwell, Houston Astros
1B - Derrek Lee, Florida Marlins
2B - Mark Grudzialanek, Chicago Cubs
3B - Mike Lowell, Florida Marlins
SS - Cristian Guzman, Minnesota Twins
OF - Vladimir Guerrero, Montreal Expos
OF - Terrence Long, Oakland A’s
OF - Jose Guillen, Cincinnati Reds
OF - Gary Sheffield, Atlanta Braves
OF - Brian Giles, Pittsburgh Pirates
SP - Joe Mays, Minnesota Twins
SP - Esteban Loiza, Chicago White Sox
SP - Ismael Valdes, Texas Rangers
SP - Al Leiter, New York Mets
SP - Tom Glavine, New York Mets
RP - Billy Wagner, Houston Astros
RP - Shigetoshi Hasegawa, Seattle Mariners
RP - Octavio Dotel, Houston Astros
RP - Buddy Groom, Baltimore Orioles
RP - Francisco Rodriguez, Anaheim Angels
RP - Jason Isringhausen, St. Louis Cardinals
Giles, Valdes, and Izzy are all currently on the disabled list and I am shopping around Giles and Valdes. It appears that Isringhausen will be back by Memorial Day at which point I will have to do some serious reliever-reduction. That task is made even more difficult by the quality of my bullpen - Wagner, Hasegawa, Dotel, and Groom are all having all-star seasons and it’s hard for me to lose faith in KRod after last year’s playoffs. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy with the direction this team is headed - I’m currently 10th out of 12 teams in my Yahoo! league but early leads rarely last, both in real life and online. Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself.
