The debate season is winding down but there are a few things I want to cover.
First, I updated the Debate Stuff section of this site today. Added is “A Debater’s Intro To Lacan,” a brief document of links and research suggestions for diving into the Lacan/Zizek debate, and our updated travel schedule (including preliminary institute plans).
Second, I’m considering putting together a list of Wisconsin debaters’ plans for summer institutes. If this is a resource that you would like to see created, please drop me a line. If interest levels are high, I will post on Cross-X and we’ll go from there.
Finally, there was a fantastic CX-L post Monday by Dan Lingel, the Director of Debate at Dallas Jesuit, that discusses the debate community in general and the TOC in particular. It is an eloquent piece that I would encourage anyone interested in debate to read… the formatting of the archived post is bothersome so let me know if you would like a cleaned-up copy. I’ll end with an excerpt from the post:
“As a community, we have much to celebrate and much more work to be done. As Jim Copeland quoted, ‘You may never win a debate if you are true to debate, but if you are not true to debate you will lose your soul.’ Let’s make sure the soul of the community stays safe for another year.”
Look for some more debate-related content shortly as I get back on my feet after a busy couple of weeks.
